Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, has fallen six places in the latest FIFA World Rankings, now sitting at 76th globally. The ranking, released by FIFA on Thursday, July 10, marks a continued decline for the four-time African champions, who once dominated the continent’s football landscape.
The drop comes after a string of underwhelming performances, including a loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw with Niger during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in September last year. These results have significantly affected Ghana’s international standing and point tally.
This latest slip leaves Ghana outside the top ten African national teams, reflecting the team’s ongoing struggle to re-establish itself among the continent’s football elite.
At the global level, reigning world champions Argentina maintain their position at the top of the rankings, followed by Spain, France, and England. Brazil rounds out the top five.
On the African front, Morocco remains the highest-ranked team, holding the 12th position globally with 1,698.72 points. The Atlas Lions continue to shine on the international stage following their impressive World Cup 2022 campaign.
Senegal has climbed one spot from last year’s 19th position, while Egypt, despite not playing any international matches since March, dropped slightly to 34th globally but still ranks third in Africa.
Other notable African teams include:
Algeria – 36th globally
Nigeria – 44th
Ivory Coast – 45th
Tunisia – 49th
Cameroon – 51st
Mali – 54th
South Africa – 57th
Ghana, now ranked 76th, sits just outside this continental top ten.
The recent decline in rankings underscores the urgent need for reform and rejuvenation within the Black Stars setup. With the next round of AFCON qualifiers and potential World Cup preparations on the horizon, Ghanaian football authorities face mounting pressure to steer the team back to its former glory.
Football analysts and fans alike are calling for strategic changes, improved player development, and stronger international performances to help the team reclaim its place among Africa’s football powerhouses.
