The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its intention to legally challenge the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a parliamentary re-run in Ablekuma North, following its narrow defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn.
Speaking in an interview with Joy FM, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed criticised the EC’s handling of the election process, insisting that the party had already secured a legitimate win in the original December 7, 2024 parliamentary elections.
“We were only waiting for the EC to complete the collation from the remaining three polling stations. The Commission knew the NPP had won. Why then proceed with a re-run?” Mr. Mohammed queried.
Background to the Dispute
The controversy originates from the highly competitive December 2024 parliamentary race in Ablekuma North, where initial results put the NPP’s candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, in the lead with 32,512 votes, just 48 votes ahead of the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, who secured 32,464 votes.
However, voting disruptions at 19 polling stations, affecting more than 6,000 registered voters, made it impossible to complete the official collation of results. After consultations involving the EC, NPP, and NDC, the Commission opted to hold a re-run on Friday, July 11, 2025, citing the need to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
The tightly contested re-run saw Ewurabena Aubynn emerge victorious, flipping the previously NPP-held seat in favour of the NDC. The win was met with celebration among NDC supporters but sparked immediate backlash from the NPP.
Mr. Mohammed signalled that the party will head to court, arguing that the EC had no constitutional basis to nullify the earlier results and proceed with a re-run. According to him, the decision undermines democratic principles and the will of voters already expressed at the ballot box.
Meanwhile, Ewurabena Aubynn, the newly declared MP-elect, has called for unity, stating that her focus is on delivering development and representing the interests of all constituents, regardless of political affiliation.
The NPP is expected to file its case in the coming days.
