The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of prompt investigations and legal action following isolated acts of violence that disrupted parts of the Ablekuma North parliamentary by-election held on Friday.
In an official statement released shortly after polls closed, the Police confirmed receiving reports of assaults and disorderly behavior at several polling stations. Though the disturbances temporarily affected voting in some areas, officers responded quickly, restoring calm and allowing the electoral process to continue.
“The Regional Command is taking steps to identify perpetrators,” the statement noted. “Anyone found to have engaged in acts of violence, intimidation, or breach of the peace will be arrested and taken through the due process of law.”
The Command emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order and called on the public to assist in investigations by providing credible information on individuals involved in the incidents.
“We urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist the police in ensuring justice is served,” the statement added.
Despite the interruptions, the Electoral Commission successfully conducted the by-election across 19 polling centers, with most voting reportedly proceeding peacefully.
The incidents have drawn criticism from civil society groups and political observers, who have renewed calls for greater security and vigilance during elections to safeguard Ghana’s democratic process.
