Ernest Kumi’s wife not contesting Akwatia seat – Eastern Regional NPP

The Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly debunked rumours suggesting that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi, intends to contest the now-vacant parliamentary seat.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, July 15, and signed by Regional Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo, the NPP described the circulating rumours and accompanying campaign flyers as false, misleading, and insensitive.

“We wish to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and should be treated with the utmost contempt it deserves,” the statement declared.

The Party clarified that it has been in continuous communication with Mrs. Kumi and her family since the unfortunate passing of the MP. According to the release, Mrs. Kumi has unequivocally stated that she has no intention of entering politics or contesting the by-election.

“Her current focus, rightly so, is to mourn her husband with dignity and in peace,” the Party added.

The NPP condemned what it called “unauthorised political flyers” and warned against the spread of such misinformation during a period of mourning, emphasizing the added distress it causes to the bereaved family.

“Misinformation of this nature only adds pain to an already grieving family… such conduct must be strongly discouraged,” the release noted.

The late Ernest Kumi was eulogised in the statement as a “committed patriot and loyal servant” to the NPP and the people of Akwatia. The Party urged its members, sympathisers, and the general public to focus on honouring his legacy rather than speculating on political succession.

“Let us uphold the values of unity, decorum, and integrity that our Party stands for,” Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo stressed.

The NPP also called on the public to continue offering prayers and support to the Kumi family and to respect their privacy during this period of mourning.
