President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Ministry of Finance will soon grant financial clearance to pave the way for region-based recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
Addressing a durbar during his ongoing ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Western North Region, President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to decentralising the recruitment process for national security agencies, ensuring that each region receives a fair and dedicated quota for enlisting young people.
“We also promised to decentralise recruitment into the security services. We’re waiting for financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, and when we get it, every region is going to have a quota to send our young people to serve in the security services,” the President said.
The clearance, once approved, will apply to the recruitment of personnel across key branches of the national security apparatus, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Ghana Prisons Service.
The move is part of President Mahama’s broader decentralisation and job creation agenda under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration. The regional quota system is expected to promote equity in job opportunities, especially for the youth in underrepresented and rural communities.
The President’s remarks were met with widespread applause from community leaders and residents, who have long advocated for a more inclusive and transparent recruitment process.
This announcement comes at a time when unemployment among Ghanaian youth remains a key national concern. Stakeholders hope the upcoming regional enlistments will not only bolster national security but also reduce youth idleness and promote local development.
