The Eastern Regional Police Command has issued a strong appeal to MTN Ghana to urgently enhance mobile network connectivity in critical parts of the region to support law enforcement efforts against armed robbery.
According to the police, the Adukrom-Aseseeso, Aseseeso-Somanya stretch, and the Donkorkrom enclave are particularly vulnerable due to poor network coverage, which criminals have been exploiting to stage attacks on commuters, residents, and mobile money (MoMo) vendors.
Speaking at the 2025 Stakeholders Forum in Koforidua, ASP Agyare Kofi Okyere, Eastern Regional Operations Commander, emphasized that the lack of reliable communication along key highways is directly impacting the response time of police officers.
“The Adukrom-Aseseeso stretch has a poor connection, and criminals are taking advantage of both the bad roads and weak network coverage to strike,” ASP Okyere noted.
Deputy Regional Commander, ACP Richard Appiah, also highlighted the increasing number of attacks on MoMo vendors, which he described as a pressing concern.
“We’re advising vendors not to count money openly and to operate from secure cages. Most importantly, they must have emergency police numbers readily available to report suspicious activity immediately,” he said.
He added that the police are engaging MoMo vendors through outreach programs to promote basic safety protocols.
The police are confident that improving network infrastructure, especially in robbery-prone areas, will enhance:
Emergency response coordination
Victim reporting mechanisms
Real-time intelligence sharing
Community-police collaboration
The appeal to MTN Ghana comes as part of a broader strategy to reduce violent crimes and protect both urban and rural residents in the Eastern Region.
