NPP 1st Vice Chairman faces suspension for lies against Akufo-Addo

The political future of Danquah Smith Buttey, the National First Vice Chairperson of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), is reportedly in jeopardy ahead of the party’s much-anticipated National Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025.

A petition has been submitted to the NPP’s National Council by a concerned party group calling for disciplinary action against Chairman Buttey. The group accuses him of spreading false claims that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had intervened to oppose the scheduled conference.

Chairman Buttey, who is currently acting as National Chairman due to the absence of Stephen Ntim, allegedly convened an emergency Council meeting on Thursday, July 10. During the meeting, he claimed that former President Akufo-Addo had personally phoned him to express dissatisfaction with the early timing of the party’s congress and preferred that the decision be overturned.

However, the former President’s office issued a strongly worded statement on Monday, July 14, categorically denying any such conversation or involvement in attempts to postpone the party’s conference. According to the statement, Nana Akufo-Addo has not submitted any petition or made any formal request to alter the decision taken during the NPP’s National Executive Committee meeting held on June 17.

The revelation has sparked outrage within the party, with many questioning the credibility and intentions of Chairman Buttey. The petitioning group argues that his actions constitute gross misconduct and a breach of party ethics, warranting his immediate suspension and investigation.

Sources within the party indicate that the Second National Vice Chairperson, Alhaji Masawudu, has been briefed on the situation and is expected to engage party leadership to determine the appropriate disciplinary measures.

The development comes at a critical time for the NPP as it gears up for a crucial national congress to shape its future leadership and strategy ahead of the 2028 general elections. The party is yet to officially comment on the petition, but internal tensions appear to be mounting as members await a decisive response from the top brass.

This incident adds to a growing list of challenges facing the opposition party, with some analysts warning that unresolved leadership controversies could impact its unity and electoral performance moving forward.
