The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has announced a sweeping directive to withdraw military protection from all civilians who are not officially entitled to such services. This move is part of a broader governmental reform aimed at restoring discipline and accountability within the armed forces.
Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, disclosed the decision in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Tuesday. According to him, the directive affects a wide range of individuals, including public officials, former ministers, businesspeople, and others who have been benefiting from military protection without formal authorization.
“As part of our reset agenda to restore discipline and accountability, we’ve withdrawn military protection for civilians (including public officials, former ministers, businessmen and women, among others) who are not entitled to it,” Dr. Boamah wrote. “This decision aims to STOP the misuse of military personnel for personal gain.”
The Defence Minister expressed confidence that the new measures would reinforce the professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces and ensure military personnel are deployed only in line with national interests.
He also issued a stern warning to service members, cautioning them against disobeying the directive. “Military personnel found providing unauthorized guard duties, and any other unauthorized duties will face far-reaching consequences,” he stated.
Dr. Boamah urged the general public to support the government’s efforts to reform and sanitize military operations. “Let’s work together to promote a more disciplined and responsible use of our military resources. We’re committed to transparency and accountability. Let’s build a more responsible and just society together,” he added.
The announcement comes amid growing public concern over the perceived politicization and private use of state security resources. The government says this decision is a critical step in reestablishing ethical standards and ensuring the military remains a neutral, professional force serving the interests of the nation.
