Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker Jackson K Bentum has spoken out in defense of his daughter, singer and actress Yaa Jackson, following waves of online criticism regarding her fashion choices.
In an interview with actress and media personality Emelia Brobbey, shared on social media earlier today, the renowned director made it clear that his daughter, now an adult and a professional in the entertainment space, has the right to wear whatever she feels is appropriate for her career.
“Because I am in the entertainment industry, I perfectly understand what is going on. I know most people don’t understand because they are not in the industry,” Bentum said, addressing the backlash Yaa Jackson has received over her revealing outfits. “Moreover, she doesn’t sing gospel songs and she can’t wear ‘kaba’ to shoot a music video. So people should understand her.”
Yaa Jackson, who transitioned from acting to music, has been a frequent topic of social media debate, particularly over her appearance in music videos and on Instagram. Her father, however, believes the public’s criticisms are largely misinformed and out of context.
Bentum revealed that much of what netizens see online—especially Yaa’s fashion in photo shoots—is done for marketing purposes. “From what I know, the outfits are purposely for advertisement and that isn’t who she is,” he explained. “But if you see her wearing those dresses in town, that is when you can call and tell me she is badly dressed. Apart from that, I don’t see anything wrong with her dress.”
He also shared a more personal perspective, describing his daughter as a naturally shy person, and expressed surprise when she chose to pursue a music career. “She is a shy person and I was surprised when I got to hear she is now singing.”
Jackson K Bentum’s comments have since sparked fresh discussion on Ghanaian social media, with many praising him for standing by his daughter and offering a reasoned take on the relationship between showbiz and image.
