The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) PLC has launched a groundbreaking 24-hour banking operation at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) in Tema, positioning itself as a key player in Ghana’s drive toward a full-fledged 24-hour economy.
Speaking at the official launch, ADB’s Managing Director, Edward Ato Sarpong, emphasized the strategic importance of providing round-the-clock banking services to support Ghana’s economic transformation. He noted that the move aligns with the government’s 24-hour economy agenda, which seeks to boost productivity, create decent jobs, and add value across key sectors.
“The 24-hour economy is not just about working round the clock but about creating added value and decent jobs towards higher productivity,” Mr. Sarpong stated.
The 24-hour banking initiative, which took effect on July 1, 2025, is specially designed to cater to the financial needs of stakeholders within the port and logistics ecosystem. These include importers, exporters, freight forwarders, customs clearing agents, and other logistics operators who depend on seamless financial services to keep their businesses running.
“By providing 24-hour banking service, ADB is ensuring port stakeholders have convenient access to perform financial transactions needed to keep their operations moving efficiently,” Mr. Sarpong added.
According to him, the decision to introduce extended banking hours is a direct response to growing demands for flexibility and responsiveness in the trade and logistics sector. He described efficient banking as a vital cog in sustaining the momentum of economic activity, particularly at major trading hubs like the Tema Port.
The launch is seen as a bold step by ADB to support Ghana’s economic modernization efforts by ensuring that critical sectors have uninterrupted access to financial services, ultimately contributing to national growth and job creation.
