Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has assured residents of Kumasi that the long-abandoned Krofrom Market project will be completed and fully operational by the end of 2026.
Speaking during his Thank-You Tour of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, July 16, Mr. Mahama visited the site of the stalled market and pledged to revive the long-delayed project, which was originally initiated in 2007. He described its completion as a critical part of the NDC’s broader plan to improve market infrastructure across Ghana.
“In our manifesto, we have something called the Market Enhancement Programme, in which we have picked 18 markets in Ghana that we are going to structure,” Mr. Mahama explained.
“So I have asked the Mayor to write to the Vice President and add Krofrom so that the project can be completed for good marketing. I believe that by the end of 2026, Krofrom Market will be completed.”
The Krofrom Market has been a source of frustration for local traders and residents for over a decade. Left incomplete, the site has become a hideout for criminals and home to reptiles, leaving the community disillusioned about its future.
Mr. Mahama’s renewed promise comes as part of the NDC’s commitment to revamping local markets to enhance trade, promote economic growth, and improve working conditions for traders, especially women.
During the visit, Market Queen Adwenehemaa Nana Sakina commended the former President for his attention to the plight of market women and expressed her confidence in his ability to deliver.
“We believe President Mahama is the only one who can complete these abandoned markets and support traders. He has our full support,” she said.
The assurance to complete the Krofrom Market has reignited hope among residents and traders in Kumasi, many of whom have long awaited a leader willing to prioritize their needs. The project’s inclusion in the NDC’s national Market Enhancement Programme is seen as a significant step toward bringing the long-delayed project to life.
