Police begin arrest process over Ablekuma North election violence

The Accra Regional Police Command has announced that it is taking swift and active steps to address the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North Parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

In an official press statement issued today, the police confirmed that investigations are underway, with video evidence currently being analyzed to identify individuals involved in the chaos that erupted at several polling stations.

“The Police have also gathered vital leads and wish to assure the public that arrests will be effected soon,” the statement read.

Key Developments:

Video Footage Under Review: Law enforcement is analyzing multiple recordings from the polling centers to pinpoint the perpetrators of violence and disruption.

Witness Statements Collected: Statements from victims and eyewitnesses are being gathered to strengthen the ongoing investigations.

Victim Support Provided: Assault victims have been issued Police Medical Report Forms to facilitate medical care and documentation.

Police Officer Interdicted: A major revelation from the statement is that a police officer caught on video assaulting a journalist during the polls has been interdicted and charged with criminal assault.

“In line with due process, the Police Officer captured in one of the videos, assaulting a journalist who was interdicted, has been held for criminal charges of assault,” the release confirmed.

The police urged members of the public to come forward with any relevant information that can assist the investigation. Citizens can call the emergency hotlines 18555 or 191 to report tips or provide leads.

The Accra Regional Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on electoral violence and misconduct and assured the public that every individual found culpable will be brought to justice.

This announcement comes amid mounting public concern following violent scenes at the St. Peter’s polling station, where macho men allegedly stormed the venue, disrupted voting, and injured several people — including a female polling agent and a former Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The developments underscore growing demands for greater security and accountability during Ghana’s electoral processes.L
