President John Dramani Mahama, in line with his constitutional duties under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, is set to submit a list of 21 High Court judges to the Judicial Council for consideration and appointment to the Court of Appeal.
The move is part of ongoing efforts to bolster the judiciary and improve the delivery of justice in Ghana.
Among the notable nominees is Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, the Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, who serves on the bench as Justice Daniel Mensah. Known for balancing traditional leadership with judicial integrity, Justice Mensah has received national recognition for his outspoken views on social justice and legal advocacy.
The nominations are being made in accordance with Article 144(3) of the Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint Justices of the Court of Appeal and High Court on the advice of the Judicial Council.
“Justices of the Court of Appeal and of the High Court, as well as Chairmen of Regional Tribunals, shall be appointed by the President acting on the advice of the Judicial Council,” the Constitution states.
