President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of his late predecessor.
The announcement was made during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) tribute session dedicated to the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who recently passed away.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the development in a brief statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter):
“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University. President Tinubu announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor.”
The move is part of a series of tributes and national recognitions being extended to Buhari, whose death has prompted mourning across Nigeria and other parts of Africa. President Tinubu described Buhari as a statesman of principle, widely regarded for his anti-corruption legacy, military background, and contributions to democratic governance.
Further details regarding the implementation of the name change and the university’s transition are expected in the coming days.
