“If We Are Buying Votes, They Should Too” — Greater Accra Regional Minister Sparks Outrage with Vote-Buying Remark

A controversial statement by the Greater Accra Regional Minister has ignited a firestorm of criticism across the political spectrum and civil society. In a widely circulated video, the Minister is heard saying:

“Every election there is vote buying, so if we are buying votes, they should also buy votes.”

The remark, seen by many as a startling admission of electoral malpractice, was reportedly made during an interaction with party supporters ahead of the ongoing parliamentary election re-run in Ablekuma North. The comment has since gone viral, drawing sharp backlash from Ghanaians who view it as a blatant disregard for electoral integrity.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has not yet commented on the viral statement, but pressure is mounting on the commission to investigate and take action.

Legal experts have also warned that the Minister’s statement could be interpreted as an admission of violating Sections 33 and 34 of the Representation of the People Law, 1992 (PNDCL 284), which criminalise bribery and corruption in elections.

“We cannot normalize illegality just because ‘everyone does it’. This is everything wrong with our politics,” one user wrote.
